Some of King Darius’ officials became jealous of Daniel because he was wise, honest, and favored by the king. They wanted to get rid of him, but they couldn’t find any fault in his work. So, they came up with a clever plan to trap him. Knowing that Daniel was faithful to his God and prayed every day, they tricked the king into signing a law that said no one could pray to any god or person except King Darius for 30 days. If anyone disobeyed, they would be thrown into a den full of hungry lions. Since the law of the land could not be changed once signed, Daniel was in great danger.
