Chapter 1

Linsey clutched Felix’s arm, her fingers trembling as she stared up at him. “You can’t leave,” she whispered, barely able to breathe. “The wedding’s about to start.”

She wore the dress she had dreamed of since she was a little girl—white, flowing, perfect. This was supposed to be the happiest day of her life. Instead, everything was crumbling.

Felix stood frozen, his jaw tight, a phone clutched in his hand. Just minutes ago, he’d read a message and turned cold. “Joanna’s in the hospital. She’s all alone. I have to go.”

His words hit her like a slap.

Joanna. Always Joanna.

She was his so-called childhood friend—his “sister,” he’d always said. But whenever she called, Felix ran. Every. Single. Time. Even if Linsey was left waiting in the rain or standing in the middle of a dinner he promised to attend. And now, on their wedding day, he was walking out again?

“Please,” she whispered. “Just today. Can’t you stay today?”

His eyes flashed. “Stop being selfish! This isn’t the end of the world. We can reschedule. But Joanna—she’s hurt. Do you want that on your conscience?”

Before she could respond, he shoved past her.

Linsey stumbled back, her heels sliding on the polished floor, and she collapsed to the ground. The gasps from the guests echoed in the hall as she watched Felix walk away without even turning around.

She sat frozen. Her heart wasn’t just breaking—it was shattering.

Then, her phone rang.

She answered without thinking, her voice shaking.

“Linsey,” came a voice dripping with smugness. “How’s your big day going? Like the little gift I sent you?”

Linsey’s breath caught. “Joanna…”

“That’s right. You finally figured it out. I sent him that message. I knew he’d come running.” Joanna laughed, slow and mean. “You planned for months, but in the end, it only took one text from me to ruin it all.”

Linsey stared down at her wedding dress. All the memories of the past five years flashed in her mind—the broken promises, the lonely nights, the excuses. She had clung to Felix because she thought he could be her family. Because she was tired of being alone.

But Felix had never really chosen her.

And he never would.

A bitter smile crept onto her face. “You think you’ve won, don’t you?” Her voice sharpened, cold and steady. “Well, you haven’t. The wedding’s still happening.”

Joanna’s amusement vanished. “What? You’ve lost your mind. Felix is the groom!”

Linsey laughed again, but this time, there was steel in her voice. “Not anymore. Tell Felix he can keep living in your shadow. I’m done begging. You two deserve each other.”

Joanna started to reply, but Linsey ended the call.

Her heart was pounding, but she felt strangely calm. She stood, lifted the hem of her dress, and walked out of the hall, leaving gasps and whispers behind her. She didn’t care. She had thirty minutes to find someone—anyone—to be her groom.

She stepped outside—and stopped short.

The entrance was crowded with men in black suits, scanning the area with sharp, focused eyes. In the center of it all was a man in a wheelchair, dressed in a sharp groom’s suit. He didn’t move much, but he didn’t need to. There was something about him—cold, quiet power, like a storm that hadn’t hit yet.

He spoke, voice low and firm. “Has Haven been found?”

A bodyguard shook his head. “No, sir. She’s disappeared.”

“She ran?” The man’s voice barely changed, but something in the air shifted. “If this wedding doesn’t happen, you know what to do.”

Linsey blinked. He’d been left too.

Without thinking, she stepped forward.

The bodyguards moved fast, blocking her path.

“I need to speak to him,” she said. “Please.”

The man in the wheelchair turned to look at her. His eyes were sharp, but unreadable. He studied her—her dress, her flushed face, the determination in her voice.

“I heard your bride ran away,” Linsey said. “Mine did too. So if you need someone to marry, I’ll be your bride.”

For a long moment, no one said anything.

Then the man smiled, just slightly—like he was remembering something long forgotten.

“All right,” he said. “Let’s get married.”
