Chapter 9

That night, I couldn’t sleep.

Sarah’s words echoed in my mind, twisting every happy moment Logan and I had shared into doubt and fear.

Was it true? Was I just a game to him? Someone to be used and discarded?

I stared at my ceiling, my heart pounding like a drum. I needed answers.

The next day at school, I waited for him after class. He was sitting with his usual crowd, laughing like nothing was wrong. When he saw me approach, his smile faltered just a little.

“Logan,” I said, voice shaky but determined. “Is what Sarah said true? Was this all a bet to you?”

He looked away, then back at me, eyes serious. “No. I never made any bet.”

“Then why did she say that?”

“Because she’s jealous,” he said bluntly. “Sarah hates seeing me with someone who’s not part of our usual crowd. She’s trying to mess with us.”

I wanted to believe him. Wanted to believe that maybe, just maybe, he really did see me—not as a joke, but as someone real.

But trusting was hard.

Especially when I’d been invisible for so long.

“Show me,” I whispered. “Show me that I’m not just another game.”

He stepped closer, his eyes locking with mine. “I’m not good at promises,” he said, “but I’m good at this.”

Then he took my hand.

And for the first time, I felt like maybe, just maybe, I mattered.
