With Pharaoh’s approval, the Israelites quickly gathered their belongings and left Egypt. They had been in slavery for generations, but now they were finally free. Because they left in such a hurry, they didn’t have time to let their bread rise, so they carried unleavened bread with them. The Egyptians, eager to see them go, also gave them gold and other valuables.

More than 600,000 men, along with their families—including women and children—set out on this incredible journey. They were not alone; God guided them every step of the way. During the day, He led them with a great pillar of cloud, showing them the right path. At night, He provided a pillar of fire, giving them light and direction so they could continue traveling safely.
