Take Courage: What AYD 2026 in Lagos Felt Like for Me

Take Courage: What AYD 2026 in Lagos Felt Like for Me

If you’ve ever been to a Catholic youth gathering in Lagos, you know the energy hits different. But this year’s Archdiocesan Youth Day (AYD 2026)? It wasn’t just another event on the calendar. It felt like a reset button.

The theme was “Take Courage”, and honestly? I didn’t realize how much I needed to hear that until I was standing in the middle of thousands of young Catholics, all singing, praying, having fun, and just being together.

The Vibe From the Moment I Arrived

I got there early (which, if you know me, is rare for anything that starts before noon). But the Lekki Deanery, which co-hosted this year’s edition, had the grounds set up in a way that just pulled you in. You could feel it before you even found your seat, drums, chatter, the smell of someone’s jollof rice from a nearby food vendor, and that unmistakable buzz of young people who actually want to be there.

There’s something powerful about seeing hundreds, no, thousands, of Catholic youth from across the Archdiocese of Lagos in one space. Different parishes. Different backgrounds. Different struggles. But for that one day, we were all on the same wavelength.

“Take Courage” Hit Different This Year

I’ve been to AYD before. I know the drill: Mass, talks, maybe a drama or two, some music, and home. But the way the theme “Take Courage” was unpacked this year felt like it was speaking directly to the room.

Let’s be real, being a young Catholic in Lagos right now is not the easiest thing. The pressure is everywhere. Social media, family expectations, work, school, relationships, and that quiet voice that sometimes asks, “Does any of this even matter?”

But sitting there, surrounded by people my age who are asking the same questions and still choosing to show up for their faith? That mattered. The speakers didn’t sugarcoat anything. They spoke about fear, doubt, failure, and what it actually looks like to choose courage when everything around you feels shaky.

I didn’t take notes. I just listened. And I felt seen.

The Moments I Caught on Video

I’m not usually the person recording everything, but some moments just needed to be saved.

Why Am I Still Thinking About It Weeks Later?

AYD 2026 wasn’t perfect. The sun was brutal. I got dust on my white. I lost my friends twice in the crowd. But I left with something I didn’t come with: a quiet sense that I’m not doing this faith thing alone.

That’s the thing about gatherings like this. It’s not just about the talks or the music or the Instagram-worthy moments. It’s the reminder that there are thousands of other young people in this city, in this Archdiocese, who are also trying, also struggling, also hoping.

And if all of us are trying? Maybe that is the courage the theme was talking about.

My AYD 2026 Photo Dump

These are the moments I caught when I wasn’t too busy just being in them. No filters, no edits, just real memories from a real day.
