Chapter 1: Congratulations, You’re Pregnant

“Ms. Wright, congratulations! Your baby is perfectly healthy.”
Jenessa Wright stepped out of the hospital in a daze, clutching the pregnancy report tightly to her chest. She glanced down at her still-flat stomach, her fingers gently brushing over it as a soft smile spread across her face. She was pregnant with Ryan’s baby!
Overwhelmed with joy, Jenessa pulled out her phone to call Ryan Haynes, her husband, eager to share the life-changing news. But before she could dial, her phone buzzed. It was a message from Ryan himself.
“Come to Imodon Hotel right now.”
Imodon Hotel? Why would he want her there all of a sudden? Jenessa was confused but didn’t dwell on it for long. She quickly hailed a cab and headed straight to the hotel. If Ryan wanted to see her, she thought, this was the perfect opportunity to tell him about the pregnancy in person.
During the ride, Jenessa couldn’t stop smiling, imagining how Ryan would react to the news. Would he be as thrilled as she was? Her heart raced with anticipation as the cab pulled up to the hotel.
As she stepped out, Jenessa noticed the lobby was beautifully decorated with flowers and a fresh red carpet. It looked like a celebration was underway. For a moment, she was stunned, but then it hit her—today was their wedding anniversary.
Did Ryan plan a surprise for me? she wondered, her heart swelling with hope.
The lobby was buzzing with guests, their laughter and chatter filling the air. Jenessa, dressed simply, moved through the crowd unnoticed. It didn’t take long for her to spot Ryan, who stood out effortlessly with his striking looks and commanding presence. He was, after all, her husband and the father of her unborn child.
But just as a smile began to form on her lips, Jenessa froze. Standing beside Ryan was Maisie Powell, his first love.
Since when was Maisie back in town?
Jenessa stood rooted to the spot, her heart sinking as she watched Ryan and Maisie interact with the guests like a perfect couple. Friends surrounded them, offering congratulations and teasing them.
“Maisie, you’re finally back! This calls for a toast!”
“Ryan, after all these years, you and Maisie are together again. Isn’t that worth celebrating?”
The teasing grew louder, and Maisie, dressed in a stunning red dress, laughed gracefully. “Stop it, you guys. Ryan already has a wife.”
At the mention of Jenessa, the crowd sneered.
“Jenessa? Please! Ryan only married her to please his grandma!”
“Exactly! Ryan has always wanted to marry you, Maisie. Right, Ryan?”
Ryan, looking every bit the prince in his tailored suit, remained calm but didn’t deny it. “Enough, stop teasing Maisie,” he said coolly. “She can’t drink; I’ll drink for her.”
The crowd erupted in laughter, and Maisie blushed shyly, her eyes downcast.
The scene was like a dagger to Jenessa’s heart. She didn’t even realize when she turned and walked out of the hotel, only snapping back to reality when the cold raindrops hit her face.
The rain poured down, soaking her to the bone, but Jenessa didn’t move. She stood there, staring blankly at the storm. Why had Ryan called her here? Was it just to humiliate her, to make her see how much he still cared for Maisie?
Her breathing grew heavy as the reality sank in. She had no place in Ryan’s life anymore. With stiff, deliberate steps, she trudged home in the rain, her mind racing.
Two years ago, her family had been on the verge of bankruptcy. To save them, she had been married off to the Haynes family. Ryan had agreed reluctantly, pressured by his ailing grandmother. But now, with his grandmother’s health improved and Maisie back in town, Jenessa knew her time as Ryan’s wife was over.
She stood in front of their house, soaked and shivering, lost in thought. How long had she been standing there? She didn’t know. But the sound of a car engine snapped her out of her daze.
Ryan’s deep voice broke through the rain. “Jenessa, why are you standing here in the rain?”
Jenessa turned to face him, her heart heavy. She didn’t know what to say. How could she tell him about the baby now, when it was clear he had already moved on?
