Chapter 15: The Final Move

The Final Move
The Final Move

The documents from Victor Kane’s safety deposit box were a goldmine. They detailed Alexander’s illegal operations, his connections to organized crime, and his direct involvement in the fire that had nearly killed Daniela. The evidence was undeniable, and when the FBI reviewed it, they moved quickly to strengthen their case against him.

Alexander’s lawyers fought back, of course. They claimed the documents were forged, that Victor Kane had acted alone, and that Alexander was being framed. But the evidence was too strong. The judge denied all their motions, and the trial date was set.

Daniela, Ethan, and Claire watched from the sidelines as the legal battle unfolded. They had done their part, and now it was up to the justice system to finish what they had started. But Daniela couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. Alexander was too quiet, too calm. It wasn’t like him to go down without a fight.

One evening, as they sat in the safe house reviewing the latest news coverage, Claire’s phone buzzed. She glanced at the screen, her expression darkening. “We’ve got a problem,” she said, holding up her phone. “Bennett’s lawyers are pushing for a change of venue. They’re claiming he can’t get a fair trial here because of the media coverage.”

Ethan frowned. “Can they do that?”

Claire nodded. “If the judge agrees, the trial could be moved to another city. It would buy Bennett more time and give him a chance to sway public opinion.”

Daniela’s stomach churned. “We can’t let that happen. If the trial gets moved, he’ll find a way to weasel out of this.”

Claire stood, her expression determined. “I’ll reach out to my contacts. We need to make sure the judge understands how important it is to keep the trial here.”

The next morning, the judge denied the motion for a change of venue, ruling that the trial would proceed as scheduled. It was a small victory, but it gave Daniela a flicker of hope. Maybe, just maybe, justice would be served.

But as the days passed, the tension in the safe house grew. Alexander’s legal team was relentless, filing motion after motion, trying to delay the trial and chip away at the evidence. And then, the unthinkable happened.

Daniela was in the kitchen when Ethan burst in, his face pale. “You need to see this,” he said, holding up his phone.

On the screen was a breaking news alert: “Alexander Bennett Escapes Custody.”

Daniela’s heart stopped. “What? How?”

Ethan shook his head, his voice tense. “They’re saying he overpowered a guard during a transfer. He’s gone, Daniela. And they have no idea where he is.”

Claire rushed into the room, her phone in hand. “The FBI is scrambling. They’ve got every available agent on this, but… Bennett’s got resources. If he’s planned this, he could be anywhere.”

Daniela sank into a chair, her mind racing. This was Alexander’s backup plan. He had never intended to go to trial. He had been biding his time, waiting for the right moment to escape.

The next few days were a blur. The FBI launched a massive manhunt, but Alexander seemed to have vanished without a trace. The media coverage was relentless, with experts speculating about where he might be and how he had managed to pull off such a daring escape.

Daniela, Ethan, and Claire stayed hidden, their safe house now more like a prison. They couldn’t risk going outside, not with Alexander on the loose. He would be coming for them—Daniela was sure of it.

One night, as Daniela lay in bed staring at the ceiling, her phone buzzed. It was a text from an unknown number: “You thought you could win. You were wrong.”

Her blood ran cold. She showed the message to Ethan and Claire, who immediately contacted the FBI. But the number was untraceable, and the message was deleted moments later.

“He’s playing with us,” Ethan said, his voice tight with anger. “He wants us to know he’s still in control.”

Daniela nodded, her hands trembling. “We need to do something. We can’t just sit here and wait for him to find us.”

Claire sighed, her expression grim. “We’ve done everything we can. The FBI is on it. All we can do now is wait.”

But Daniela couldn’t wait. She couldn’t just sit there, helpless, while Alexander was out there, plotting his next move. She needed to take control, to fight back.

The next morning, she called a press conference. Ethan and Claire tried to talk her out of it, but she was determined. “If Alexander wants to play games, I’ll play too,” she said, her voice steady. “I’m not hiding anymore.”

The press conference was held in a secure location, with FBI agents and private security surrounding the area. Daniela stood at the podium, her hands trembling but her voice strong. “Alexander Bennett thinks he can run,” she said, looking directly into the cameras. “But he’s wrong. He can’t hide forever. And when he’s found, he will face justice. I won’t stop until he does.”

The media erupted with questions, but Daniela didn’t stay to answer them. She had said what she needed to say. Now, it was up to the world to hold Alexander accountable.

As they returned to the safe house, Daniela felt a strange sense of calm. She had done everything she could. The rest was out of her hands.

But as she lay in bed that night, her phone buzzed again. Another text from an unknown number: “See you soon.”

Daniela’s heart raced, but she didn’t show the message to Ethan or Claire. She couldn’t. They had already done so much for her. This was her fight now.

She stared at the message, her mind racing. Alexander was out there, watching, waiting. But she wasn’t afraid anymore. She was ready.

Because the storm wasn’t over yet. And neither was she.
