Nathan’s Visit

Nathan’s Visit

One day, Nathan the prophet came to King David’s palace with an important message from God. Instead of confronting David directly, Nathan told him a story to make him understand his wrongdoing.

He spoke of two men—one rich and the other poor. The rich man had many sheep and cattle, while the poor man had only one little lamb that he loved like a child. It ate from his plate, drank from his cup, and even slept in his arms. One day, a guest came to visit the rich man. Instead of taking one of his own many sheep to prepare a meal, the rich man took the poor man’s only lamb and served it to his guest.

When David heard the story, he was outraged. He stood up in anger and declared, “That man deserves to die! How could he be so cruel?”

Then Nathan looked David in the eye and said, “You are that man.”

At that moment, David realized that Nathan was talking about him. The story was a way to show David that, by taking Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah, and having Uriah killed, he had acted just like the rich man—taking something precious from someone who had little. This was God’s way of confronting David about his sin.
