The Aftermath

Lot and his daughters finally arrive at the safety of the mountains, feeling shaken, heartbroken, and overwhelmed by the events that had just occurred. As they stand there, they can’t help but look back toward the valley, where the once-thriving cities of Sodom and Gomorrah had been. All that remains is a dark, thick smoke rising into the sky, filling the air like the fumes from a massive furnace. They see the devastating aftermath of the destruction, knowing that the places they had once lived in and the people they had known are now gone forever. It’s a moment of sorrow and realization for them, as they witness the destruction of a world they once knew.

Genesis 19:28 describes this scene: “He looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah, toward all the land of the plain, and he saw dense smoke rising from the land, like smoke from a furnace.” This passage captures the immense scale of the devastation and the deep sorrow that comes with witnessing such destruction.
