As King David grew older and weaker, the issue of who would take over the throne after him became more urgent. People began wondering who would become the next king of Israel. Among David’s many sons, two in particular stood out in this struggle for succession: Adonijah and Solomon.

Adonijah, one of David’s older sons, believed he was the natural choice to be king simply because of his age and position in the family. Without waiting for his father’s decision, he began to act like he was already the ruler—gathering support, holding feasts, and even surrounding himself with chariots and soldiers to appear powerful and kingly (as described in 1 Kings 1:5).

However, things were not that simple. David had already promised the throne to his younger son, Solomon. This choice was not made lightly—David was influenced by the prophet Nathan, a trusted spiritual advisor, and by Solomon’s mother, Bathsheba, who reminded David of his commitment to her son (1 Kings 1:17).

This created a deep conflict within the royal family. On one side was Adonijah, trying to take the throne by force and assumption. On the other was Solomon, quietly waiting, but backed by powerful supporters and, most importantly, by David’s word. This rivalry between brothers led to a tense and dramatic turning point in Israel’s history, setting the stage for a complicated and high-stakes transition of power.
