After many years of living away from his homeland, Jacob decided to return home. However, he was afraid that his brother Esau might still be angry with him for taking his birthright and blessing. Jacob remembered how he had deceived Esau and feared that his brother would seek revenge. As he prepared for the journey, he sent messengers ahead with gifts to appease Esau, hoping to find favor in his eyes.

Genesis 32:6-7 (NIV):
“When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, ‘We went to your brother Esau, and now he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.’ In great fear and distress, Jacob divided the people who were with him into two groups, and the flocks and herds and camels as well.”
