The Stolen Blessing

The Stolen Blessing

Isaac had his doubts, but he still blessed Jacob, thinking he was actually Esau. Even though he was unsure, he relied on what he felt and heard, rather than what he suspected. This happened because Jacob, with the help of his mother Rebekah, disguised himself as Esau to receive the blessing that was meant for the firstborn. Isaac, who was old and nearly blind, was deceived and gave Jacob the blessing, believing he was Esau.

This event is recorded in Genesis 27:22-23 (NIV):
“Jacob went close to his father Isaac, who touched him and said, ‘The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.’ He did not recognize him, for his hands were hairy like those of his brother Esau; so he blessed him.”
