Chapter 11: A Bump in the Road

As Jenessa’s pregnancy progressed, so did her relationship with Ryan. They had settled into a comfortable rhythm, spending time together and preparing for the baby’s arrival. But just when things seemed to be going smoothly, life threw them a curveball.
One evening, Jenessa received a call from her mother, whom she hadn’t spoken to in months.
“Jenessa, darling, it’s been too long,” her mother said, her voice warm but tinged with concern. “How are you? How’s the baby?”
Jenessa hesitated, unsure of how much to share. “We’re doing well, Mom. The baby’s healthy, and everything’s on track.”
“That’s wonderful to hear,” her mother replied. “Listen, I know we haven’t always seen eye to eye, but I’d love to see you. Maybe we can have lunch and catch up?”
Jenessa felt a mix of emotions—relief, apprehension, and a lingering sadness. Her relationship with her mother had been strained for years, but she couldn’t deny the part of her that longed for reconciliation.
“Alright,” she said finally. “Let’s do lunch.”
When they met at a cozy café a few days later, Jenessa was struck by how much her mother had aged. There were new lines on her face, and her once-vibrant energy seemed subdued.
“Jenessa, you look radiant,” her mother said, her eyes softening as she took in Jenessa’s growing bump. “Motherhood suits you.”
Jenessa smiled, feeling a flicker of warmth. “Thanks, Mom. It’s been a journey, but I’m excited.”
As they ate, they talked about everything and nothing—work, the baby, and even Ryan. Jenessa was surprised by how easy it was to talk to her mother, and for the first time in years, she felt a sense of connection.
But as the conversation turned to the past, the old wounds resurfaced.
“Jenessa, I know I haven’t always been the best mother,” her mother said, her voice filled with regret. “I was so focused on the family business that I neglected what really mattered—you. I’m sorry.”
Jenessa felt tears prick at the corners of her eyes. “Thanks, Mom. That means a lot.”
Her mother reached across the table, taking her hand. “I want to be a part of your life, Jenessa. And my grandchild’s life. If you’ll let me.”
Jenessa nodded, feeling a sense of hope. “I’d like that.”
As they left the café, Jenessa felt a mix of emotions—relief, sadness, and a cautious optimism. She knew rebuilding their relationship wouldn’t be easy, but she was willing to try.
But just as things seemed to be looking up, another challenge arose.
A few days later, Jenessa received a call from Sarah at work.
“Jenessa, I need to see you in my office,” Sarah said, her tone serious.
Jenessa’s heart sank as she made her way to Sarah’s office. She had a sinking feeling that something was wrong.
When she walked in, Sarah’s expression was grim.
“Jenessa, I’m afraid I have some bad news,” Sarah said, her voice heavy. “The company is going through some restructuring, and unfortunately, your position is being eliminated.”
Jenessa felt as though the ground had been pulled out from under her. “What? But… I thought I was doing well.”
“You were,” Sarah said quickly. “This isn’t a reflection of your performance. It’s just… budget cuts. I’m so sorry, Jenessa.”
Jenessa nodded, her mind racing. She had worked so hard to build a career, and now it felt like it was slipping through her fingers.
As she left the office, she felt a mix of emotions—anger, fear, and a sense of helplessness. She didn’t know what she was going to do, but she knew she couldn’t give up.
When she got home, Ryan was waiting for her. He took one look at her face and knew something was wrong.
“Jenessa, what’s going on?” he asked, his voice filled with concern.
Jenessa took a deep breath, trying to steady her nerves. “I lost my job. The company’s restructuring, and my position was cut.”
Ryan’s eyes widened in shock. “I’m so sorry, Jenessa. That’s… that’s terrible.”
Jenessa nodded, feeling tears well up in her eyes. “I don’t know what I’m going to do. The baby’s due soon, and I don’t have a job. How am I supposed to provide for us?”
Ryan stepped forward, pulling her into a hug. “Hey, it’s going to be okay. We’ll figure this out together. You’re not alone, Jenessa. I’m here for you.”
Jenessa buried her face in his chest, letting the tears flow. She didn’t know what the future held, but she knew one thing for sure—she wasn’t going to face it alone.
