Moses’ Reluctance and God’s Assurance

When God called Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, Moses hesitated. He was uncertain and afraid. “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” he asked. Moses doubted his own ability, feeling unqualified for such a huge task.

God reassured him, saying, “I will be with you.” But Moses was still unsure. “What if they don’t believe me or listen to me?” he asked.

To strengthen Moses’ faith, God showed him miraculous signs. He told Moses to throw his staff on the ground, and it instantly turned into a snake. Then, when Moses picked it up, it became a staff again. Next, God instructed Moses to put his hand inside his cloak. When he pulled it out, his hand was covered with leprosy—a serious disease. But when he put it back inside and pulled it out again, it was healed.

Even after witnessing these miracles, Moses was still worried. “Lord, I am not a good speaker. I am slow in speech and tongue,” he said, fearing he would not be able to convince Pharaoh or the Israelites.

God reassured him once more: “Who gave human beings their mouths? Who makes them deaf or mute? Who gives them sight or makes them blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.” (Exodus 4:11-12)

Despite his fears, Moses finally obeyed. To further support him, God sent his brother Aaron to speak on his behalf. With God’s guidance and Aaron’s help, Moses stepped into his role as the leader of the Israelites.
